Resurgent Medvedev Wins Maiden Championship in Nearly 30 Months
19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been won on hard courts
A resurgent Daniil Medvedev claimed his maiden championship for over two years with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the competition final.
The athlete, a ex- world number one, has had a torrid season, winning just one win at the major tournaments and suffering a setback at the US Open.
The player's inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and issues with his serve in specific - caused him dropping out of the top ten and ultimately splitting with long-time coach Gilles Cervara.
Currently training with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually progressed in the last few weeks - peaking in a tightly fought three-set victory over challenger Corentin Moutet.
This represents the player's first title after the Italian tournament and maiden on a hard surface from that period of the previous year.
Success also means Medvedev has achieved 21 championships at twenty-one distinct tournaments.
"This marks the first occasion I have attended a competition with my both daughters at once, so to secure a title is especially meaningful," commented ranked player Daniil Medvedev.
"This victory is in honour of my younger daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I got when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."
The athlete, the former major winner, had lost his previous six title deciders, including in that event previously this season.
His defensive strategy and regular reactions on the tennis court had prompted observers to question if his skill to compete at the top level was finished.
Yet the athlete has altered his approach in the past month, attempting to approach the net and perform aggressively, supported by an better service.
Medvedev came back from a deficit in the initial set against the tricky Frenchman, taking four of the last five games to gain the advantage.
The competitors exchanged break points in the second set before the challenger, bidding for his first ATP Tour victory, gained dominance to push for a third set.
Moutet rescued 4 initial break points in a tight deciding set before Medvedev broke to 15 to close out the victory.
Fittingly, the winner earned victory with a rally at the net, with Moutet unable to manage a return after over two and a half hours.
